ANGIE HANAN SEEKS RE-ELECTION FOR FORT BEND ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES, POSITION 1

Excited to Work with Stakeholders to Continue Moving Forward, Together

Sugar Land, TX - Wednesday, January 18, 2023 – Angie Hanan is excited to officially announce she will seek re-election to the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees, Position 1 this May. Hanan – former teacher, literacy coach, district level administrator, and educational consultant – was elected to her seat in November 2020 and is currently in her 26th month of a 30-month term, shorter than the standard three-year term due to the 2020 election postponement.

Devoted mom, career educator, and longtime District volunteer, Hanan is looking forward to continuing her work towards helping the District improve in key areas - Student Achievement, Stability, Stakeholder Involvement, Success Outcomes and Safety and Security – so that the community and Board can continue making positive forward progress together.

As a member of a relatively new board, Hanan is one of the three most tenured trustees with over two years of experience, sharing the dais with two board members who have been in place for 20 months, and two who won their seats only eight months ago. Her re-election would ensure the stability required to address challenges and make impactful change. Over the course of her term to date, Hanan has utilized her past educator experience coupled with her commitment to preparation and accessibility,

to represent and serve stakeholders as a Trustee.

Some of Hanan’s accomplishments on the Board to date include:

  •  She was instrumental in supporting staff health and wellness by increasing administration's recommendation of five additional COVID-19 days to 10 days at the height of the pandemic. It was extremely important to Hanan to utilize ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds to ensure staff who contracted the virus had time to fully recover before coming back to the hard work of supporting our students. Hanan’s motion passed unanimously by the full board.
  • She also led the charge to encourage staff to regularly and formally seek student input. Since 2021, thousands of students have responded to the annual student engagement survey. The data collected is valuable for decision-making and improving District services and programs.
  • She encouraged administration to develop procedures to provide unassigned epinephrine auto-injectors to each campus, as allowable under Texas Education Code. Now all FBISD campuses have them and they can be administered by a trained and authorized individual to someone who is reasonably believed to be experiencing an anaphylactic reaction.
  • She is especially proud of time spent regularly facilitating brief sessions with the Leadership 101 high school students and serving as a mentor to a student at Hunter's Glen for the past two years because working with kids is one of her greatest joys.

“There are three duties of a board member: governance, building public trust and creating the vision for the district,” Hanan explained. “To carry out these duties, a board must support the entire community, including students, staff, and the superintendent. Individually and collectively, board members must recognize the value of each of these stakeholders as key contributors to the success of Fort Bend ISD. Sometimes hard questions must be asked to ensure no stakeholder is left without a voice.”

Hanan is committed to asking hard questions as the District faces some tough decisions in the near-term surrounding the budget deficit, school boundary recommendations and a potential bond election in May. Because she believes that stakeholders working together for proactive planning is critical to the success of our students, Hanan is always willing to engage and dialogue with parents, students, staff and community members.

Since the beginning of her term, Hanan has served as the SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) board liaison, Calendar Committee board liaison, and Board Policy Committee member. Hanan and her husband have been FBISD residents for almost 30 years. They started out in Richmond and currently live in Sugar Lakes in Sugar Land. Her daughter is a junior at her zoned campus, Dulles High School.

The FBISD Board election will be held on May 6 2023, with early voting from April 24th – May 2nd . April 6th is the last day for voters to register to vote in the May election, and April 25th is the final day to apply for a mail-in ballot. Voters can learn more by visiting Hanan’s web page at www.voteangieforfbisd.com. Hanan believes that voters play a critical role in supporting our District’s students and teachers at the polls. She urges registered FBISD residents, including staff members, to make their voices heard with their votes so the FBISD community can continue moving forward, together.
